About Sirohi

History of Sirohi

Sirohi has a long and rich history. The city got this name from the Siranwa hills, on the western slope of which it stands. The fact that the city is located at the head (sir) of the Thar Desert (Rohi), is also a reason for getting the name. Some people tell that the name may also have been derived from sword. Rao Sobhaji founded the town of Shivpuri on the eastern slope of Siranwa Hill in 1405. Sehastramal, his son and successor, founded fortress on the eastern slope of the same hill in 1425. This place became his capital and grew into the present Sirohi town.

After independence, central Government and minor rulers of Sirohi signed an agreement with which Bombay Government took over the administration of Sirohi from 1949 January 5 to 1950 January.
